I asked myself a question of “If I had 100 followers, what would I do?”
And it led me to discover the things that I would have done to help me grow Instagram. It inspired me to share my tips on how to increase my Instagram followers organically.
As someone with more than 80k followers on Instagram, I can still relate to small Instagram accounts.
It’s where I started.
Because of that, I am going to break down step-by-step on what I would do if I had 100 followers on Instagram. If you are interested in watching the full Youtube video, go ahead and press play.
But if you’re an avid reader, continue to scroll for all of my powerful tips on growing Instagram.
If I Had 100 Followers, I Would Clean Up Instagram Bio
The first thing I would do is revamping my Instagram bio. Think of your Instagram bio as the equivalent of the sign on your door.
What would you put there?
You would probably put something that’s going to introduce everyone in the house. It’s the same principle. If I had 100 followers, these are the 4 key components I would focus on my Instagram bio:
- Why should they follow me?
- What can they expect from me?
- Who am I?
- How can I help them?
I would specifically make sure that it’s clear to people who I am and what I do. If you have a small number of followers on Instagram, you should consider putting your content pillars in your bio.
For example, if you are a fashion account, make sure people know that you are a fashion account. Use the same reason why you are following your favorite celebrity or influencers. And then apply that to your Instagram bio.
Make sure that when people stumble upon your account for the first time, they don’t have to scroll to figure out who are you.
One thing that I have to tell you is that you don’t have to overthink your Instagram bio. I have seen a lot of people who spend way too much time on their Instagram bio as if it’s the most important thing. Yes, it’s important to get exposure on Instagram but it’s not everything.
If I Had 100 Followers, I Would Be on Different Platforms
The second thing I would consider doing is to be more searchable. But Instagram is not the most SEO friendly platform.
For example, if someone is searching for “3 Rules for Instagram Stories Engagement” in the search bar, your content will not show up. Your IGTV, caption, or videos are not going to show up. It’s just the way Instagram is.
Because of this, I believe you should be on a searchable platform more. This way you can attract more audiences from other platforms to your Instagram.
I would highly recommend for you to be on Youtube, podcast, Facebook, Pinterest, or even start blogging. This way you can push your content to be more searchable for the targeted audience.
Use my journey as an example.
The majority of my followers found my Instagram because I am searchable on Youtube. And if you decide to be on any of these platforms, use people’s problems to your advantage. Make sure your content helps them in figuring out the solutions to their problems.
The key here is to gain traffic from these searchable platforms to your Instagram. Obviously, you don’t have to be on every platform. Find out which one resonates with you the most and use it.
If you enjoy creating videos, then Youtube is your platform. If you like writing, start a blog to talk about your topics.
If I Had 100 Followers, I Would Be Build Authority
The third piece of advice is for people who are more interested in growing their business on Instagram.
If your goal is to start a service-based business or coaching business, you should consider building authority.
Especially if you are just starting out, building authority on Instagram is important. When I started out, I worked so hard in doing the same thing. I decided to work with a handful of free clients or discounted clients. It’s all because I knew that I didn’t have any experience yet at that time.
Everything that I did was just to build my authority on Instagram. It allowed me to build social proof on Instagram and even outside of that platform. I transitioned from working with difficult clients to increase my prices as I gained more experience.
I believe that if your goal is to get more leads to your business, it’s important to build that authority. You can do this by collecting testimonials from your clients and documenting your journey. Make sure you share feedback from your clients or their massive wins.
So, if I had 100 followers like most of you probably do, I would first build my authority.
If I Had 100 Followers, I Would Treat DMs Like Customer Support
If you want to grow Instagram followers, you should start treating your DMs like customer support.
The best way to make people feel acknowledged is by showing that extra love. Anyone who is messaging you should get the same fair acknowledgment and respect from you.
This was exactly what I did a year and a half ago. I replied to almost everyone on DM. Now, obviously, it’s a lot harder for me to do that now because my DMs are crazy. But if you have a small audience, this is a powerful thing to do. If you have the capacity of answering every single one of your DMs, do it.
You can go above and beyond for them too. Send voice notes to show them that “wow” factor. This way, you will be able to convert clients easily.
If you are approachable, your audience will see that and they will enjoy that about you.
Even if their messages are as simple as “Hey, I really like your content!”, I would go above and beyond. I would even send a voice note thanking them for supporting me. And top of that, I would ask them what they want to see more from me. If you want, you can also ask them what they do and what are their goals.
So, by having these conversations, you are building rapport. It will help you with growing your business on Instagram.
If I Had 100 Followers, I Would Create Shareable Content
The next one would be to create shareable content on Instagram. Based on my experience, creating content that is shareable on Instagram has helped my account tremendously.
I continue to get more leads and more sales into my business because of my shareable content. The powerful thing about creating shareable content on Instagram comes when people share and save them.
The more people share your content, the bigger the audience you are exposed to.
When I looked at my most recent content vs the older ones, I have been getting way more saves and shares than previous content. And for me, I like that better than having more likes.
Because the more shares and saves I have, that means the better my content is to the audience.
When creating this type of content, aim to create content that can go viral versus a photo of yourself. This way, the shareable content can automatically bring me more traffic on Instagram, too.
If I Had 100 Followers, I Would Post Consistently
The next thing I would do if I had 100 followers on Instagram would be to post consistently.
I highly recommend posting at least two to three times a week. At least from the beginning, this is the right number for a small account.
The reason why is because you’re still building authority.
Posting consistently will allow you to grow a following easily. The more you appear on their feed, the more time they will spend checking your account out.
When you are posting once in a blue moon, you are increasing the chance of followers leaving. Because there is no point in them sticking around if you are not active. If you post one video a month, they are going to unfollow you.
Personally for me, my traffic has been exploding when I started posting regularly. However, I also highly recommend you to manage your time wisely. Posting consistently is different than posting regularly. You don’t need to post daily to the point you’ve exhausted your ideas.
The most important thing is being consistent.
Make sure you schedule your content everything properly. It has less to do about frequency but more about your frequency.
If I Had 100 Followers, I Would Collaborate With Other People
Once you’ve developed that consistency within your Instagram account, you should start collaborating.
I personally think there’s so much power in building genuine relationships.
Especially with Instagram and social media, building that community connection is important. Even if your audience is small, collaborations can get you really far. You are not only collaborating for the sake of growing. But you are collaborating for connections.
And through these new connections, you will be attracting a new audience.
I would also make an effort in surrounding myself with content similar to mine. I would usually like posts from people who post similar things to me and engage with that. This will not only help me create new connections, but it will also let Instagram know about me. This will allow Instagram to understand what type of account I have.
Always pay attention to what you are posting. If you are posting about coaching social media, stick to it. Because if you are suddenly posting about dogs, it’s going to confuse Instagram.
Collaborations are important in making sure where you belong and what niche you are in. It’s crucial in helping you grow Instagram followers organically.
